Legend: WITH THE DECLINE OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE came the rise in importance of the Empire of the East, centred on Byzantium. Here tradition was all, and the only flexibility or variation in costume was in the dress of the Greek and Roman clergy and the Byzantine ascetics. The print depicts the imperial costumes of the Byzantine patriarchs. Fig. 8. represents Andronic II Palaiologina, who was the emperor from 1273 untill 1322. Group in fig. 5 represents Manuel Palaiologina, who was the emperor from 1391 untill 1425, along with his two sons, John, who became John Palaiologina in 1419 and Theodore Porphyrogenete, the Prince of Sparta. Fig. 4. depicts the tiara of Emperor Michael Palaiologina. The group in fig. 6. represents the patriarchs from Antioch, Syria, figs. 1,3 and 7 are orthodox bishops.
