The egg fruit is so named because its flesh appears to have the texture of a boiled egg yolk. At once seemingly dry and crumbly, the texture soon softens and smooths in your fingers or mouth, the thick custard has the most pleasing sweetness, much like sweet potato pie without all the spices. It’s one of our favorites. The Bruce canistel, in fact, is considered to be one of the better tasting cultivars of the pouteria campechiana genus, and is well suited for warmer climates of hardiness zones 9-12.
