As usual one edge is slightly rough and uneven from being removed from the binding. And there's the slightest bit of text offsetting to the creamy whitebackground. This is an original hand-colored print - #257 - "Pileated Woodpecker" - from the royal octavo first edition of John James Audubon's Birds of America, published 1840-1844. Lithographed, printed, and colored by J.T. Bowen, Philadelphia, 1840-44. The first octavo edition was produced under the direct supervision of John James Audubon and features strictly hand-coloring. The credits are in italics, as required. Gorgeous upper tier print, #19 in a ranking of the 50 most collectible Audubon octavos.
