(Ames Sword Company) over a "flaming bomb" (Ordnance Department's acceptance stamp) and date "1906". The U.S. M1906 saber’s iron guard improved its strength and replaced the M1860's brass guard. This M1906 Cavalry saber has had its guard painted a brass color some time in its distant past. Saber's overall length=42.5", Blade length=34.75", & Weight in grams=1034g (see Photo). History: About 19,000 of these sabers were made, all were made in 1906, to replenish the dwindling supply of serviceable U.S. M1860's in U.S. Ordnance stocks. No one in 1906 could have imagined that light cavalry - on the battlefield - would be supplanted by field radios and other battle communication’s devices, machine guns, airplanes with arial bombs, tanks, precision artillery, etc. Even on the cusp of America’s entry into the Great War, the U. S. continued developing a new thrust centric cavalry saber with improved hand protection - the U.S. Model 1906 Cavalry saber’s replacement - the U.S. Model 1913 “Patton” saber.
