Description: Antique Chess from the mid-1940s Sandalwood and Rosewood * * * * * Beautiful and delicate chess set with a tall and slender look from the mid-1940s. Made from real sandalwood and rosewood. The sandalwood still retains a strong fragrance. The kings are 3 inches tall with a 1-inch base. The pieces are unweighted. The set has been used in the past. Considering the age of its production, all the pieces impressively stand erect and feel silky smooth to the touch, a testament to the workmanship. The delicate ramparts on one of the white rooks are partially broken, as pictured. Otherwise, the set is remarkably intact considering its age. I had glued on round felt bases to the chess pieces, but since they are unweighted, the felt pieces reduced stability, so I removed them. You will see some residual glue marks on the base of the pieces, but these have no effect on the wood, and will not scratch the board. I am just mentioning this, so there will be no surprises. Included is a beautiful lacquered chess board that also acts as a box with 1.375 inch squares that perfectly matches this chess set. This is a board I had custom-made a few years ago by a workshop in India for a different chess set, and it was never actually used, so it is in new condition. Sandalwood is VERY expensive, and is permitted for use only in tightly controlled quantities by the government of India. It is very difficult to find chess sets made out of sandalwood. Although not as rare as sandalwood, rosewood is also an exquisite and expensive wood.
