His 1927-1937 collection spans a number of fascinating voyages on ships and on foot. Mr Loomis would go on to join the Merchant Marines in WWII. This personal photo is likely the only original in existence. This photograph depicts a Varney Air Lines mail plane at Seattle Airport in June 1931. The image shows three individuals inspecting the nose and propeller of the biplane, which is stationary on the tarmac. The surrounding area includes a background of trees and another aircraft partially visible in the distance.Varney Air Lines was one of the first airlines to carry mail under contract with the U.S. Post Office Department. The airline was notable for its role in early airmail service, which was a crucial stage in the development of commercial aviation in the United States. Varney Air Lines later merged with several other carriers to form United Airlines, a major legacy airline operating today.Visible in the photograph is the text “Varney Mail Plane” written on the lower left corner. The individuals inspecting the aircraft are not identified and their backs are to the camera, making it difficult to recognize them.
