Description: This rich oil and oil glazes en brunaille on cradled mahogany panel measures 20 1/2" x 25 1/2" framed; 15 1/8" x 20 1/8" actual and depicts a 17th century northern European interior with numerous still life-like vignettes and a single figure seated at a fire. Executed primarily in tones of tan or white, the artist has used several tones of glaze to develope the space and lighting and to accentuate details. The back of the panel bears a very old (18th c.) red wax seal with crossed keys and a mitre along with an old inscription, "Willem Kalf". Willem Kalf (1619-1693) was a Dutch Golden Age painter known for having brought still life subjects to a new height of quality. This panel bears many characteristics of Kalf's interior works and is likely by a contemporary of Kalf. The work is stable with fairly uniform shiny varnish and several scratches as pictured. There is a stable crack to the right and the work has been appropriately and attractively framed. WE ARE ALWAYS HAPPY TO SHIP WORLDWIDE IF ALLOWED BY USPS. Please e-mail me if you have any questions.
