Antique oil. Axel Birkhammer(1874-1936):”Landscape near the Silkeborg lakes”

Description: ARTIST: Axel Birkhammer is a well-listed Danish artist, whose works have been offered at auctions multiple times, including famous auction houses such as Bruun Rasmussen, Christie’s and Doyle. He was an exhibitor at the famous Charlottenborg. He studied at the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen. He was born “Jensen”, but changed his name to “Birkhammer” in 1913. His favorite scenes are landscapes (mostly from the area around the Silkeborg lakes) and village scenes – occasionally with people. PAINTING: Oil on canvas. The painting is a lovely rendering of a varied landscape near the Silkeborg lakes. To the right a sandy path winds its way through the heather, while to the left is a meadow with a line of trees. In the far distance to the left, one can just make out the waters of one of the Silkeborg lakes. The hilly terrain and the lakes in this area was formed around the end of the last ice age by the retracting ice and meltwater. Today, probably Denmark’s most famous hill “Himmelbjerget”(litt. “Heavenmountain”), can be seen and visited in this area, but with its mere 147 m above sea level, its name is a slight exaggeration. On the front of the frame is a small plaquette with the artist’s name. I’ll date the painting to somewhere between 1915-1920. Signed: “A Birkhammer” in the lower left corner. SIZE: With frame: 60 cm/23.6" * 49 cm/19.3". Without frame: 44 cm/17.3" * 33 cm/13". CONDITION: The painting is in great ready-to-hang condition - no holes, tears or missing paint. The frame has minor scratches and stains.
