Today we pleased to offer for sale an outstanding antique Edwardian presentation walking stick! For centuries, gentlemen have carried walking sticks as a symbol of their social standing. By the 18th century, the custom of presenting a person with a finely crafted cane to commemorate an event or achievement had become widely practiced. During the Victorian and Edwardian eras, presentation canes and walking sticks were often adorned with intricately designed gold handles with fanciful monograms and/or insignias, and worn as a token of respect and congratulations. Some were made to record important accomplishments of an individual’s life or experiences, or to denote a person’s company, rank, and military campaigns. This extraordinary antique cane exhibits absolutely stunning craftsmanship - a perfect example of a very fine and luxurious Edwardian-era presentation walking stick. It features a lavish and ornate 14k yellow gold top (un-marked but jeweler-acid tested); the handle is hallmarked with the letter "G". The top features delicate repousse designs which are incredibly hand-chased, in a Beaux Arts Baroque-inspired design, with dramatic leafed swirls. Each graceful pattern and design has been hammered into the gold by hand, which is incredible considering the enormous amount of fine detail in the pattern. The convex top features a floral outer border and intricate floral etched medallion; it is beautifully engraved with "HH" and "1914". The shaft is made of rich, dark wood, which complements the dazzling shine of the 14 karat gold handle beautifully and still retains its original metal ferrule heel. Overall an outstanding example in superb condition. The walking stick presents beautifully and is in very good, antique condition, with minor wear and patina commensurate with age. The top has minor wear and tarnish and a faint distortion to a small part of floral border. The shaft has very minor wear and scuffing. Please review all photos before purchasing.
