Roman Empire Double Denarius Coins Each double denarius coin measures somewhere between the size of a modern penny up to slightly smaller than a quarter (20-23mm in diameter). The front side of the coins features the portrait of the reigning emperor, and the reverse side features various designs of Roman gods or emperors. We can translate the inscriptions for you upon request. History of the double denarius The double denarius, or antoninianus, was a Roman coin that was first produced in 215 A.D. by Emperor Caracalla. Each double denarius was worth roughly a Roman soldier's daily wage. Each of these coins was officially equivalent to two ordinary denarius, but actually only contained 1.5 times the silver, which quickly drove massive inflation. As the decades passed and the Roman economy grew weaker, the amount of silver in the double denarius was decreased by successive emperors. By the late 200's, the coin was made completely of bronze with only a light coating of silver. The double denarius coins we are selling here are from the earlier years (215-250 A.D.) when the coin was still primarily silver.
