Description: Presented is a fine English Georgian sterling silver covered entree dish, with lion form finial. This piece dates to 1804 and was made by Robert Garrard I. The dish is done in a lovely classical form, with a gadrooned edge around the top of the lid and the rim of the bottom portion of the dish. The interior of one side has a monogram of ELP. The exterior side of the lid has a fine engraved armorial crest, above a banner with the Latin motto, 'Persevera Deo Que Confide." This translates to 'Persevere, and trust in God.' The finial of the dish is beautifully cast in the form of a standing lion, holding a shield which has never been monogrammed. This piece can be used as a covered dish for serving an entree or vegetable, or the finial can be removed and the lid can be used as a second, open dish. This piece is in great overall condition. There are some knife marks to the bottom interior of the dish, commensurate with use. The finial is not original, but matches beautifully. The lid fits one way but not the other, so if there's a gap when the lid is put on, simply turn the lid the other direction. There are no splits, no dents, no monogram removals, and no repairs. This piece is hallmarked on the side of both the lid and the bottom with the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard's head crowned for the city of London, the date letter I for 1804, King George III's head duty mark, and the maker's mark for Robert Garrard I. The lion finial is a later addition, but we have tested it with nitric acid and guarantee it to be sterling silver. The dish has approximate dimensions of 11 1/4 by 8 1/2 by 5 5/8, LxWxH, including the height of the finial. The height to the top of the lid is 3 1/4 inches. This piece weighs 1593 grams or 56.2 regular ounces. -jm Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
