Description: For sale today is this terrific original antique hand-painted tin advertising sign for "Mutual Assurance" also known as "Panonceau de Compagnie d'Assurances." This is a beautiful example of late 19th century painted advertising. We recently purchased three of these signs from the estate of a professor at the University of Kansas. These are VERY RARE. The only other examples of these we found were in the collection of the Musee de Carnavalet in Paris France. These are terrific examples of sign painting by an unknown artist. The condition of this sign is terrific! This was lacquered at some point to preserve the painting and could be professionally restored. It is on thin tin. Has wear on the edges and punch holes where it was hung. The colors are vibrant and the imagery is stunning. This sign shows a farm house with a lightning bolt and hail with "Grele" at the top and "P.M.A" at the bottom. Translated into hail damage and the initials are for the insurance/assurance company. Measures aprox 12.75" x 10". The provenance was listed as having come from the estate of a Fred Herbert "F.H." Bassett of Denver Colorado. I was able to locate a Frank Herbert Bassett who was an inventor and Optician born in 1853. Thats all I could find. I believe this was sold from his estate, purchased by the professor and then to us.
