Until the introduction of the euro in Spain and France, the Spanish peseta and the French franc were the de facto currencies. On 1 January 2002, the euro was put into circulation and became the country’s de facto currency. The budgets of the Consell General were drawn up in pesetas. On 1 April 2012, a monetary agreement came into force that allowed Andorra to officially use the euro and mint its own euro coins. The first issue of Andorran euro coins took place in December 2014.
