Description: Air Force 1 Smithsonian Series A00147 Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress Diecast Model USAAF 91st BG, 323rd BS, #42-31909 Nine O Nine, RAF Bassingbourn, England, 1944 1:200 Scale Length WidthBoeing B-17G Flying Fortress 4.5" 6.25" First delivered to the 91st Bomb Group on February 24, 1944, the soon-to-be prolific bomber - named for the last three digits of her serial number - immediately got to work, flying her inaugural mission the following day. By the end of the war, "Nine-O-Nine" had flown 140 combat sorties (believed to be a "Mighty Eighth" record) without losing a single crew member. She also flew at least 126 consecutive missions without aborting, also believed to be a record. While she was scrapped after the war, the Collings Foundation has an airworthy B-17 Flying Fortress currently painted in commemoration of the legendary bomber. Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress Designed to meet a US Army Air Corps requirement for a multi-engined bomber to replace the B-10, the B-17 first flew on July 18, 1935. Best known for its role in the US Army Air Forces' daylight strategic bombing campaign during World War II, the B-17 could fly high and had a long range, and was capable of defending itself from enemy fighters. It was also tough, withstanding extensive battle damage, and was capable of carrying a 6,000 lb bombload. The B-17 became one of the symbols of Allied air power, equipping 32 overseas combat groups and dropping a total of 580,631 metric tons of bombs on European targets.
