Description: Ghanaian hand-painted movie posters are a significant form of African art, created to promote local cinema in a time before widespread digital printing. These posters are typically painted on recycled flour sacks, reflecting the resourcefulness and creativity of the artists. This practice began in the 1980s when video cassettes and mobile cinemas became popular in Ghana. Local artists were commissioned to create large, eye-catching posters to attract audiences to these screenings. Each poster is unique, as artists often added their own interpretations and embellishments to scenes from the films, sometimes including elements not present in the actual movie. These posters were transported from village to village, displayed outdoors, and subjected to harsh weather conditions, which contributed to their wear and tear. By the mid-1990s, as television and video became more accessible in Ghana, the demand for hand-painted posters declined, and cheaper photocopy posters became the norm. This particular hand painted flour sack poster is one of the coolest i’ve seen and features images of the punk class film Suburbia. Its signed by the artist Farkira. It measures 41” x 62”
