Description: SVART HONA - Fertile Hatching Eggs for Extraordinary Rare Breed Chickens Custom Quantities available to suit your incubator's needs. See my other listings. Svarthöna is a "landrace" originating from "Kadaknath" in India, which later became "Ayam Cemani" in Mozambique, then moved to Norway by sailors in the 17th century. Svarthona has since adapted to a northerly climate, but has retained the rare quality of black skin and connective tissue. In 2012, Green Fire Farms and Ewe Crazy Farms each imported one breeding pair to the US. Ewe Crazy Farms also imported unrelated eggs in the same year. There are NO other lineages in the US due to the ongoing poultry import ban (2014). We have acquired genetics from BOTH domestic US lineages. It is our vision that this breed of chicken can become the ideal backyard free range egg layer for northern North America. We'd love to see hundreds of thousands of these birds colonize the upper continent. They're flighty, good egg layers, tough skinned, and have shown no signs of disease despite the cold wet conditions here. Our farm is in USDA zone 4 which is similar to the climate in Norway where these birds originate. Our bird have survived nights down to -25F without issues in minimally protected tent "hoop coops". We keep 3 flocks of Svart Hona in SPIRAL BREEDING rotation.Approximately 8-12 Roos and 60-80 Hens at any given time, each flock with its own coop. Our svarts free range in 3 day rotation so that each flock is separate. Our feed is 100% ORGANIC, fresh ground, grown locally, and acquired by the ton.We keep them fed with a "meat chicken grower mash", plus every 3rd day free range, and access to oyster shell. We have a "only the strong survive" mentality towards our breeding program. Our birds face heavy predation from weasels, eagles, hawks, fox, opossum, raccoon, and bobcat; We're surrounded by thousands of acres of state forest and we have no fencing. They also are exposed to cornishX meaties, ducks, guineas, geese; and the wild.At any sign of weakness, injury, or disease we cull. Every spring we hatch to refresh our flock. Every bird is numbered by leg band and data is kept with feature descriptions and hatch dates. Males are selectively culled each fall. Non preferred hens are offered to the local community as egg layers. In our experience the Svart Hona meat is NOT jet black like the Ayem Cemani internet images you see; it is more of a dark grayish purple with black connective tissue, dark silverish skin. We've hatched enough now to see some interesting traits of this unique breed; you might might get an otherwise all black rare roo with blue ear feathers,or an odd chick that is significantly more dark silver than the other all black hatch mates. Some birds have a strong green shimmer to their feathers; others are more purple in the shimmer. Some roos have thick combs; others more thin and reptilian in texture. We believe this landrace desperately needs genetic diversity so we DO NOT cull for any of the above cosmetic reasons. We do however cull roos for white foot bottoms, reddish combs, or pink mouths. Our farm is also part of our homeschooling program; these birds have been raised with kid gloves. We are doing our best to preserve and improve the genetics of this exotic fibromelanistic breed and appreciate your support. WE HAVE A STEADY SUPPLY BUT RESERVE THE RIGHT TO DELAY SHIPPING TO GET YOU THE BEST EGGSEGGS WILL SHIP WELL PACKED AND INSURED, HOWEVER:LIKE *ANY* MAIL ORDER HATCHING EGG SUPPLIER, WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT HAPPENS IN TRANSIT At Mountain Roost, we strive to provide you with high-quality and fertile eggs for successful hatching. Please understand that hatch rates can vary due to a variety of factors beyond our control once the eggs leave our possession. Although we are unable to guarantee hatch rates, we want to assure you that the eggs we ship are sourced from our robust breeding age hens and roosters, known for their fertility. To maintain the consistent fertility of our eggs, we constantly breed and refresh our flocks using the same eggs we ship. Furthermore, we consistently receive positive feedback on the successful hatches of our eggs across the country. If, unfortunately, your eggs fail to develop in your incubator, it is highly likely that this is the result of internal egg damage incurred during shipping, or potentially due to faulty incubation conditions. We understand that this can be disappointing, but we kindly request you to consider these factors before attributing the unsuccessful hatching solely to our eggs. Your feedback is genuinely important to us, and we highly appreciate any insights you can provide regarding our communication, packaging, and shipping services. Your feedback should focus primarily on how well we fulfill our obligations as a seller of hatching eggs, rather than solely relying on your hatch results. We want to emphasize that once you receive a box of intact eggs, the transaction is considered complete. We kindly ask for your understanding that negative feedback based solely on unsuccessful hatching is unfair and detrimental to our small family business. Thank you for your understanding and support. We truly value your business and look forward to the opportunity to serve you again in the future!
