In my travels, I've met folks who think that Near Mint (NM) actually means Mint (M), and Slightly Played (SP) is also Mint (M) / Near Mint (NM). I think the wording I've chosen is a little more descriptive of the condition although it lines up with most commonly used grades. Things that affect the grade: Scratching Border Wear Corner Wear The grade I give a card, specifically deals with the wear of the card. Any other type of condition issues; Bends, Creasing, Foil fogging, Water Damage, etc. will be described in the listing details. For example, a card may have never been played but lived in a three ring binder, right in the middle, so... "Generally card is Near Mint, but has a binder dent on the left edge". Grades: Mint - Pretty much straight from a pack. I don't like to call things Mint that show even the slightest sign of play wear and generally do not list anything as Mint. Near Mint - Card has the slightest signs of playwear. Maybe played once or twice without a sleeve, like in a draft. Or several times sleeved and picked up a thing or two along the way. Minor Playwear - Similar to what is commonly graded Slightly Played or Lightly Played, these cards show minor signs of being played. To me, "Slightly Played" describes how much the card was played, and does not reflect the amount of wear on the card. A card could be played a hundred times double sleeved and show very slight signs of wear, or could be played a handful of times with no sleeve and get a little beaten up. Minor Playwear seems more descriptive. Moderate Playwear - Moderately Played, similar criteria as above, just played with more. Heavy Playwear - Heavily Played, this generally also includes additional information in the listings description. I use + (plus) and - (minus) to distinguish cards that fall in between grades. Just like in school where you can get an A, A-, B+, B, etc..., Here you may see a Minor Playwear + which just means generally in better shape than your typical slightly played card, but not quite Near Mint. Additionally a somewhat common grading concern is shuffling creases. These commonly occur when a deck is riffle shuffled vertically instead of horizontally. It is the worst way to shuffle a deck, and you should not shuffle this way. Similar to what was described above, a card will be given a grade for the general overall wear of the card, and then given a separate "grade" for the shuffling creasing: Very Slight, Minor, Moderate, and Heavy. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
