Description: 3rd Michigan Cavalry 3x5 Flag 3rd Michigan Cavalry 3x5 Flag Third Michigan Cavalry USA Style Battle Flag with Honors The 3rd Michigan Cavalry was organized at Grand Rapids, Michigan in September of 1861, mustered into service on October 4th, 1861, and consisted of 1160 officers and enlisted men. A total of 3 officers and 27 enlisted men were killed or mortally wounded in action, while 4 officers and 380 enlisted men died of disease. During their service, the 3rd Michigan Cavalry participated in many major engagements including Oxford, Island #10, Shiloh, Holly Springs, Coffeeville, the Siege of Corinth, Iuka, Jackson, Greneda, and Mobile, to name a few. They also were very effective in many skirmishes, scouting missions, and special assignments such as delivering communications between Generals Grant and Sherman across enemy territory after Confederate forces successfully destroyed telegraph communications in the area. They were also tasked with driving out guerilla forces from North Mississippi and Tennessee. The regiment received commendations from Generals Sherman and Rosecrans for their bravery and effective execution of their duties which earned them the reputation as one of the finer cavalry regiments in the US Army. The regimental flag that was carried by the 3rd Michigan is a national flag with a blue field containing two crossed sabers with 3 appearing above and Mich below the sabers. The design is surrounded by 34 five-pointed stars. Battle honors appear on five of the six white stripes. The regiment was mustered out of service on March 15, 1866. Private James Robinson of Company B later would be awarded the Medal of Honor for conspicuous bravery during the fight at Brownsville, Arkansas, on January 27, 1864. This is a reproduction of the 3rd Michigan Cavalry. The actual dimensions and materials are not the same as the original flag. This flag has an aged, vintage finish and is designed to appear as the original flag looks today.
