Description: Lignadenarist special! If you are a lignadenarist, there's no need to explain the term. And if you have been one for many years, you may have heard a few of the names I will be dropping, and that might make this lot very special indeed. The lot consists of 39 pieces in total, 2 wooden dollars (oversized), 10 wooden nickels, 20 flats of various denominations from 5 cents to one dollar, and 7 flats with no denomination. This group comes from a larger collection of coins and exonumia I acquired in 2020 from a man who was cleaning out a house he bought as a fixer-upper. These items were left behind when the house was sold by the estate of the previous owner, who passed away in 2019. That man was the son of a longtime numismatist named Denis Culhane Sr, who was 1985 president of the Rochester (NY) Numismatic Association, and upon his death in 1987, these items passed to the son. I believe that some of the collection, and these items in particular, may have belonged to another ex-president of the RNA and also a former president of the New York State Wooden Money Society. That man's name was William 'Pete' Carr. His name appears on several of the pieces in this lot. Other names that may be familiar, if you're a long-time collector, are John Lawrence, Norm Boughton, Clinton & Barbara List. All were officers of NYSWMS at one time, Lawrence was a founding member and Boughton was editor of a hobby publication called 'Beaver Bits'. Maybe even Frank Degilio will spark some recognition. Roughly half of the items are in the form of holiday greetings between members, and here I am guessing Mr Carr was the recipient of at least some of them. The remainder are announcements of meetings, shows etc of various wooden money clubs, or a few commemoratives. The last one in the last picture honors Frank Degilio, who died in 1985, for his many years of promoting numismatics among kids - the collectors of the future. The images are pretty much self-explanatory, some are homemade while others were made to order (and some are a combination of both). The flats are fragile items prone to splintering. A few show some light splits but overall this group is in nice shape. This is stuff you do not see every day. I have seen a few of the large wooden dollars for Nyack, but the personalized items are not commonly seen. While obscure, they would make a great addition to a comprehensive wooden money collection. Insured shipping on the lot is $7. I have broken the balance of the 'wooden money' portion of the larger collection into several groups, for those who may be interested. One I will probably list on eBay. The others may best be offered locally on Craigslist, as there is more local focus. But if there's any interest, let me know. For eBay, there is a group of 25 flats, all made by the John Rogers Co of Ohio, from 16 different communities, and all are different, ranging between 1938 - 1956. Also for eBay I have a few individuals and pairs of nickels that won't have much local interest. For the Rochester and New York State market, there are three lots. 1. 118 different wooden nickels, most from the 1960s, commemorating founding anniversaries for cities, towns or villages in New York state. There are 48 different communities represented but where there are two or more for a community, all are different. Experienced collectors are familiar with the color variations and that is present, with 'sets' of 3 to 6 colors for the same design, and in a couple of cases where there are two of the same color, flip side versions of buffalo and Indian heads are the difference. 2. A small group of Rochester area vintage advertising wooden nickels (with one defunct Bartholomay Dairy milk cap) 2. A small but comprehensive collection of wooden nickels and ephemera related to the Rochester Numismatic Association, with nickels announcing coin shows or awards banquets in honor of outgoing presidents, some full sets of color variations, an RNA enameled pin and more. 89 different pieces. Some are flats from the NYSWMS but with a direct Rochester connection. Three flats are Denis Culhane Sr's membership cards in the NYSWMS, and are signed by John Lawrence, Secretary (and former president and a founding member of NYSWMS). All are imaged, so if there's any interest I can send pictures and can create a special listing for you.
