One of these C-clip retainers holds the recoil spring onto the guide rod, allowing the removal of the recoil spring/firing pin assembly for cleaning and maintenance. It is very common for this tiny C-clip to escape and once it does, if it is not lost it is likely misshaped and can no longer be considered reliable.
