Description: Mint: Staatliche Münzen Baden-Württemberg Denomination: €2 Quality: UNC Issue limit: 525,000 Alloy: Base Metal Diameter: 25.75 mm Weight: 8.5 grams Design: Laimonis Šēnbergs Box/Capsule: No/No Certificate: No This is the last issue of four in a series of 2 euro commemorative coins dedicated to Latvia's cultural and historical regions. It features the coat of arms of Zemgale. The coat of arms of Zemgale, a silver elk, symbolizing the richness of nature, on a blue background, is based on the coat of arms of the Duchy of Semigallia (which existed in the 16th–18th centuries). The issue continues the centennial of Latvia’s independence, which will be officially celebrated and observed in November 2018. Although Latvian independent statehood was interrupted in 1944, when the Baltic Republic was forcibly incorporated into the USSR, and not reversed until 1991, Latvians will celebrate their centennial anniversary in two years. The years 2018 through 2020 will be very important in Europe, as many countries will be celebrating their official centenary anniversaries of statehood or independence following the Great War (World War ) after which many new countries, including Latvia, emerged from the fighting and concluding peace treaties. Zemgale is one of the four historical and cultural regions of Latvia recognised in the Constitution of the Latvian Republic. The milled edge features the inscription DIEVS SVĒTĪ LATVIJU (God Bless Latvia), with the words separated by stars.
