Description: To get the elephant out of the room, I'm sort of stunned how many Turtlecreek Potters (the correct name, by the way) masterpieces are crazed, like this platter. Most sellers are completely honorable and honest about acknowledging the crazing, especially since Turtlecreek made the unfortunate choice to use lead glaze -- incredibly rare in possible food-related pottery since the FDA set regulations against its use more than 50 years ago, in 1971. Wherever you buy Turtlecreek pottery, check the description and magnify the photos if you plan to use the piece for food or drink. Sad but true. That aside, this platter is still a work of art that can be used for other purposes, from a wall hanging, to a centerpiece display, to a desktop catchall. Turtlecreek Potters, founded in 1984, now the Workshops of David T. Smith in Morrow, Ohio, is/was home to skilled designers and artisans. Betty Lou, who created this platter in 2004, was definitely one of them. You'll find other (more expensive and also crazed) remarkable Turtlecreek designs by her. Oddly enough, I like the pattern the crazing has added to what would have been a simple cream-colored home and leaves. But that's me. This platter belonged to my late sister Betsy, who owned and sold a great deal of Turtlecreek Potters works in her crafts and collectibles shop in Pittsburgh, PA. She featured artists/crafters from Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Thanks for looking!Rick
