Description: This beautiful original gouache painting, from approximately 1850, has a few small faint spots of foxing and some minor creases indicating it had not always been framed and protected. It is presumably, and almost certainly, by the Italian artist Gaetano Defino. He is known to have signed the back side of his paintings as indicated by his works that have sold at Christies. The gouache was professionally framed in approximately the mid-20th century. As such, I do not want to disturb the professional framing/backing. Stylistically, and based on the subject matter of his other paintings, I believe there is no question it is the same artist. You can also compare the the grey background he used with white handwritten writing in the lower margin, also identical to Defino's other works and his handwriting. The dimensions are also near-identical to his other works. Frame size: 43" x 26" Painting size: 34.75" x 17.75" (including visible margins/white handwritten title)
