Weighed down by a $3.5 billion debt (largely from buying a fleet of 26 757's and 34 Airbus A300's) and deteriorating labor relations, former astronaut, and retired U.S. Air Force Colonel, Frank Borman (CEO of Eastern Air Lines) agreed to sell the Eastern Air Lines to Texas Air, led by Frank (Francisco) Lorenzo, in 1986 for $615 million. Lorenzo added Eastern to his existing prizes of People's Express, Frontier Airlines, Texas Air, Continental, and New York Air. Lorenzo was selling off assets and transferring Eastern's aircraft to Texas Air. He was also accused of depleting Eastern's pension fund. Lorenzo let Texas Air “purchase” Eastern's advanced reservation system (System One) but issued only an I.O.U. for it (due in 2012). Eastern then had to pay Texas Air a monthly fee of $10 million to use its own system. He “sold” six of Eastern's planes to Continental but paid nothing for them. The result was that, to survive, Eastern had to sell off aircraft and lay off workers in large numbers. Se sold heart of Eastern (THE SHUTTLE) to Donald Trump! Eastern began a three year retreat in 1988 with the dismissal of 4,000 employees and the reduction of West Coast service. The company had to sell aircraft, and Texas Air transferred many core assets to Continental in terms that were very unfavorable to Eastern. On March 4, 1989, Lorenzo locked out mechanics and ramp employees who were unwilling to accept deep cuts in pay and benefits. Pilots and flight attendants followed with a sympathy strike. As soon as the unions (IAM, ALPA, and TWU) struck in March 1989, Lorenzo filed for bankruptcy. Lorenzo sold the pioneering Eastern Air Lines Shuttle to Donald Trump. This gave Lorenzo some breathing room and allowed him to use strikebreakers to continue operations. By this time, however, Eastern was collapsing under its debt. The last flights took place on January 18, 1991 and the Eastern ceased operations at midnight on January 19, resulting in the loss of 18,000 jobs mostly in Miami and New York.In late 1991, the airline was liquidated. Thus ended the life of one of America's greatest domestic airlines. This NO-LORENZO Logo could be seen everywhere when the strike began in early March 1989. Questions: Ask me before you bid.
