Description: "Interior, 1893" Source: Vuillard, published in 1968 Description Title: "The traditional title of this delightful painting, Interior at l'Etang-la-Ville, is invalidated by the date of its conception, seven years before Roussel and his family moved to that suburb of Paris. It does represent the interior of Madame Vuillard's workroom in the Rue St. Honoré, and has for its principal characters Vuillard's elder sister Marie, busy sorting materials, and his great friend the painter Ker-Xavier Roussel, who shyly peeps around the flowered screen at the young woman. In fact their marriage took place in 1893, so the painting constitutes a sort of pictorial epithalamium, a celebration of the Vuillard family happiness at this event. So few of Vuillard's interiors have any dramatic content that this little scene, with its faintly theatrical air, stands out exceptionally. How subtly the two main characters, mutually watchful, relate one to the other. Vuillard's training in the theater was not wasted. As a work of art it cannot be better described than in the words written that same year about Vuillard's interiors by the critic Gustave Geffroy: 'His paintings remind me of the obverse of a tapestry; the weight of the human figures, and the gold and silver of light, and the velvet of shadow-all appear in different guise. His is an art, too, of attitudes, and folded arms, and pale hands. Vuillard has found a new and delicious way of expressing the poetry of a quiet hearth and the beauty of thought and action that underlies that poetry.'" Unique and distinctive. Suitable for framing. *All prints are book plates / pages that are professionally removed from an original published book or other type of publication.
