Description: 1964 Press Photo Angola-St. Gabriel warden, H.L. Hanchey, Louisiana - noo25599 This is an original press photo. Angola- The pendulum of prison life here now is about midway between the arc peaks in 1950 when 123 convicts cut their heels to protest brutality and 1958 when Warden Maurice Sigler resigned during a controversy over a pretty ex-Bourbon St. Stripper who acted as his inmate secretary. Following the 1950 protest, reforms were established. A new prison was built. Convicts were given increased privileges. By 1958 the pendulum had swung in the other direction and a state investigation was begun. Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo is dated 8-4-1964.
