The deed states that Cooper had bought the land from one John Hackett in 1765 and further states that the land was located in Hackettstown! This leads us to one of the most intriguing questions concerning our town – how did the town acquire its name? Hackett operated the Union Iron Works in what is now High Bridge for them from about 1749 until 1760, when he took over the management of the Andover Furnace near Waterloo. He was twice acting governor of New Jersey and was one of the first trustees of the College of New Jersey, which is now Princeton University. John Hackett’s influence was such that by 1769 the town of HACKETTSTOWN was on the map. On March 1, 1853, Hackettstown became an incorporated town upon passage of a bill by the State Assembly. The Board of Trade had been active for several years before and the town’s business and industrial expansion was largely attributed to that group. American Saw Mill Machinery Company and the Lackawanna Leather Company both located here in 1903. Another major industry, the M & M Mars candy company, relocated here from Newark in 1958. Today Hackettstown is a thriving community, which retains a good deal of small town charm and atmosphere. Excerpted from and by permission of Hackettstown Remembered Through Postcards by Raymond A. It is perhaps best known as the home to the US headquarters of Mars, Inc.. As of the 2020 United States census, the town's population was 10,248, an increase of 524 (+5.4%) from the 2010 census count of 9,724, which in turn reflected a decline of 679 (−6.5%) from the 10,403 counted in the 2000 census. Hackettstown was incorporated as a town by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 9, 1853, from portions of Independence Township. Portions of territory were exchanged with Mansfield Township in 1857, 1860, 1872 and 1875. HistoryFoundingWilliam Johnson (1817–1891) was a prime contributor to the incorporation of the town in 1853. He and his brother George (1815–1889) were successful merchants in the town beginning in 1839 when they began operating the W.L. & G.W Johnson dry good store. The two men were very active in community affairs. George was a member of First Presbyterian Church, a director of the Hackettstown National Bank, and a member of the Hackettstown Water Board. Both men were involved in the establishment of the Union Cemetery. Hackettstown was named after Samuel Hackett, an early settler and large landowner. Hackett is said to have "contributed liberally to the liquid refreshments on the christening of a new hotel, in order to secure the name which, before this, had been Helms' Mills or Musconetcong." In 2011, the town council proclaimed a sister city relationship with Hacketstown [sic], Ireland https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hackettstown,_New_Jersey________________________________
