This is a 5-coin proof set that was acquired by me many years ago and has been stored to protect the coins and the original U.S. Mint packaging. It dates back to the year that Rosa Parks was arrested after refusing to give up her bus seat; Jonas Salk's Polio vaccine was declared safe and effective; the USS Nautilus became the first operational nuclear powered submarine; Disneyland opened in California and the Brooklyn Dodgers won the World Series in seven games against the New York Yankees. This was also the year that the U.S. Mint introduced the Proof Flatpack. All five coins were enclosed in a single cellophane blister-pack and placed in a small manila colored envelope with a like sized piece of cardboard to protect from folding. While this was a leap forward from the small boxes that had been used previously, it is amazing to compare this to today's multi-coin cardboard cutouts to hold the coins and then encased in clear plastic holders and placed into bright colored, printed boxes. In these early years the manufacturing of proof coins was similar to today's process. Each coin was struck by a process that left the fields highly mirrored and in some rare cases gave the coin's devices a cameo effect. Regarding this specific set, each coin has lots of luster and the fields are highly mirrored. Sorry, there are no cameos in this one. The set contains three 90% silver & 10% copper coins, the Franklin Half Dollar, the Washington Quarter and the Roosevelt Dime. The Jefferson Nickel's composition is 75% copper & 25% nickel and the Lincoln Cent is composed of 95% copper & 05% tin and zinc.
