Dust jacket is chipped at head and tail of spine. Hinges of spine & flaps are worn on dust jacket with some toning. Light toning to edges of dust jacket, but overall attractive. Navy boards normally scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Head and tail of spine bumped; silver gilt lettering bright and clean. Previous ownership inscription found at top edge of front end-page: "Lolita 2/56." Fore-edges of pages 104-5 chipped/torn, but text remains legible. Binding intact. Please see photos. The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Miller Hemingway (1899 – 1961), was first published in 1952, and won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1954. Written between December 1950 and February 1951, it tells the story of Santiago, an aging fisherman who catches a giant merlin after a long struggle, but then loses his bounty to sharks. The novella was highly anticipated and was released to record sales; the initial critical reception was equally positive, but attitudes have varied significantly since then.
