Description: 1948 PRESS WIRE PHOTO OF BROOKLYN DODGERS MANAGER LEO DUROCHER SHAKING HANDS WITH COMMISIONER HAP CHANDLER WHILE BRANCH RICKEY PUTS HIS ARMS AROUND BOTH. LEO HAD BEEN SUSPENDED IN 1947 FOR ASSOCIATING WITH GAMBLERS BY COMMISIONER CHANDLER. HE WAS REALLY IN HOT WATER FOR THREE REASONS. FIRST, HE HAS MARRIED LORRAINE DAY IN JANUARY. MS. DAY HAD JUST DIVORCED HER HUSBAND THE DAY BEFORE MARRYING LEO. THE DIVORCE WAS NOT LEGAL IN THE US YET SO THEY HAD TO GO BEFORE THE COURT FOR BIGOMY. THIS CREATED A BOYCOTT OF THE DODGERS BY THE BROOKLYN CATHOLIC YOUTH LEAGUE. ALSO 1947 WAS THE YEAR BRANCH RICKEY WAS BRINGING JACKIE ROBINSON TO THE MAJORS. SOME OF THE DODGERS MADE A PETITION TO TRY AND KEEP JACKIE OUT OF THE MAJORS. RICKEY WAS UPSET WITH LEO THAT HE HAD NOT HEADED OFF THE PLAYER PROTEST. THE THIRD REASON WAS THAT LEO WAS SEEN CONSORTING WITH GAMBLERS. THIS WAS TOO MUCH FOR CHANDLER AND LEO WAS OUT FOR THE 1947 SEASON. THIS PHOTO IS DATED APRIL 1948 AND THE CAPTION STATES IT IS IN VERO BEACH WHICH WAS SPRING TRAINING HEADQUARTERS FOR THE DODGERS. Measures 8.25 by 8.125 inches. Please see scan for condition. Not a mint photo. Has a couple of wrinkles. I take my feedback seriously. So please ask any questions you may have and I will be glad to answer them. I will gladly combine shipping on multiple items.
