It was issued in 1941, during World War II, the same year the Japanese took Hong Kong. The Japanese invasion of Hong Kong began on December 8, 1941. After intense fighting, the British Crown colony of Hong Kong surrendered to the Japanese forces on December 25, 1941. The Japanese occupation was to last 1,345 days until August 30, 1945.
