Description: This exciting WW2 photo album contains photos taken by American Robert D. “Bob Haggie” Hagadorn of Brooklyn, NY in 1941 and 1942 during his time in Jamaica. On March 27, 1941, an agreement was signed between England and the United States providing for the lease of lands in Jamaica to establish United States air (Vernam Field) and naval facilities (Goat Islands). As seen in the photos, Bob was meticulous in identifying and labeling the photos in the album. I’m unsure of Bob’s role in WW2 but based on the photos, it appears that he was in Jamaica during the U.S. base construction. Bob also appeared to have worked in an important role since many photos show his servants and times of leisure. One of those leisure excursions includes tea and tennis at the Mahfood’s mansion. The album begins with Bob’s voyage aboard the SS Talamanca, which includes women and children passengers. Once in Jamaica, there are photos of Bob’s first home located at 1-B Eureka Road and photos of the “gang now at base”. The second home Bob lived at was at 1 Shiboe Avenue. Bob is seen enjoying the pool at Constant Springs and Dunns River. There are photos of the General Offices and U.S. Engineers in Kingston. There are photos of Bertha, who was Bob’s cook, Mary, who was Bob’s maid, and Joseph, who was Bob’s gardener, shoe shiner, coconut peeler, and cane stripper. There are photos of “Saturday Night Rendezvous” at the Anglo American House Tavern. One January 1, 1942, Bob took a photo of “old glory flying for the first time on the base”. There is a photo of CO-5 “our Hotel Scorpion” and an interior view of Ed Klock’s Room. I really like the photos of Bob holding a 38 Police Special. There are also photos of heavy machinery. The canteen and barber are photographed and Major Smith of the payroll department. There is even a photo of road building with men and women doing the work. In total, there are 129 photos that highlight the time Bob spent in Jamaica during WW2. When closed, the album measures approximately 9.5 x 7 x 1 inches. Most of the photos measure approximately 3.25 x 2.25 inches. Thanks for looking!
