Description: Dyke's Automobile and Gasoline Engine Encyclopedia: The Elementary Principles, Construction, Operation and Repair of Automobiles, Gasoline Engines and Automobile Electric Systems, Including Trucks, Tractors, Airplanes and Motorcycles, Simple, Thorough and Practical 1918 7th Edition, info goes back to the turn of the century. It’s big! Not in size, but in pages, as in 919 pages. Dimensionally this hardcover book measures just 6.5 x 10-inches (but 3 inches thick), and has long been known by hardcore car enthusiasts to be the ultimate source of significant information pertaining to prewar automobiles. Its content is so interesting that even postwar and late-model car enthusiasts will find it useful, as most of the information contained within is applicable to far newer automobiles. Published by the Goodheart-Willcox Company of Chicago, the first edition appeared way back in 1910. My copy, seen here, was published in 1918, and was already the 7th edition. So, just what type of information is included in this book? Well, everything. It features all the elementary principles of the automobile, construction, operation and repair. Not only for automobiles, but there’s a large section in the back of the book on trucks, tractors, diesel engines, aircraft engines and motorcycles. The book opens with pages on the general assembly of the automobile, and all its components. Then there’s more pages on the gasoline engine alone, followed by pages on carburetors, with in-depth information about chokes, priming methods, float adjustments, troubles and remedies. Then follows pages on electricity, with specific chapters on ignitions, starters, generators, electrical systems, troubles and testing, and batteries. If that isn’t enough, there are chapters on tires, operating and care, and many hundreds of pages devoted to all aspects of repair. Truly amazing! Best of all, the Dyke’s encyclopedia is written in a clear, concise manner that is easy to understand. There are thousands of illustrations and line drawings to show you all the different parts that make up a particular component, with call-outs detailing each individual part. This book would pertain to these car makers of that era: Allen, Apperson, Auburn, Bell, Ben Hur, Bour-Davis, , Brewster, Briscoe, Buick, Cadillac, Cameron, Case, Chalmers, Cole, Columbia, Comet, Crawford, Cunningham, Chevy, Chrysler, Davis, Detroiter, Dixie Flyer, Dorris, Dort, Dodge, Elcar, Elgin, EmpireFiat, FRP, Ford, Franklin, Grant, Glide, Hackett-Four, HAL-Twelve, Halladay, Harvard, Hatfield, Hudson, Hupmobile, Jackson, Jones, Jordan, King, Kissel, Kline, Laurel, Lexington, Liberty, Madison, Marion-Handley, Moline-Knight, Moon, Locomobile, Marmon, Moon, Nash, National, Nelson, Oakland, Olds, Overland, Packard, Paige, Peerless, Pierce Arrow, Princess, REO, Roamer, Stanley, Saxon, Simplex, Singer, Studebaker, Willys-Knight, Winton, Woods and Yale, and much more, like Trucks, Tractors and Indian Motorcycles.
