Description: For sale today is a very curious and rare note. It is an 1899 $1 Black Eagle silver certificate Fr 233* with Teehee-Burke signatures. It is the scarce Type 1 faceplate with the number in the center of the position letter. These are very early Teehee-Burke notes that were modified from serviceable Parker-Burke plates. Most of the Teehee-Burke production were made with the Type 2 plate where the number is at the base of the letter. Beyond that, this has to either have been a lost sheet or a late finished plate. There really is no research into LFPs on large size notes, but I know of one other Black Eagle. The famous LFPs are the $10 1934-A Silver Certificate plates 86 and 87, and the $5 1934 back plates 629 and 637. The reason I suspect this is because this note is serial numbered 1 million notes higher than the last of the Type 1 notes, and 1.5 million higher than similar plate numbers. Being a star note, that would equate to well over 150 million regular notes, or over a full serial block. The Murray star note book (in the pictures) has charts of serial numbers and plate numbers, and by this point in production they were already up to faceplates in the 5300s. This note has plate 2687, which long since would have been retired almost a year earlier. This note is featured in the top row of the right column in the chart, the only one with Murray number 8a denoting Type 1 face. They would not have engraved and used 2700 more new plates and left this one in service. So either it was printed and the sheet misplaced for a long time and later serial numbered when found, or this Type 1 plate was finished very late and put into service at the time of Type 2 plates numbered over 2000 higher. All in all, a very fascinating variety and something I have never seen before. The note is graded PCGS VF-20 with no comments. The Murray book lists the scarce Type 1 star notes at $1700 in VF versus $500 for the common Type 2. And who knows what the odd variety would be worth, as this is unknown and unresearched. But an awesome note overall! Thanks for looking and have a great day!
