Description: The Northern Pacific Railroad (NP) was a major US railroad that served the north-central and north-western portions of the country, with a small amount of trackage into Canada. It had lines in Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon, Washington and Wisconsin in the US, plus Manitoba and British Columbia in Canada. The NP operated several famous "named" trains, to include the North Coast Limited and the Mainstreeter. The NP merged with three other railroads in 1970 to form the Burlington Northern and ceased to exist as a corporate entity. Surviving trackage is now a part of BNSF. For auction is a seldom-found common stock certificate from the NP dated June 5, 1879. It is for 10 shares at $100 each. 1879 Northern Pacific Railroad common stock certificate Click images to enlarge Description The Northern Pacific Railroad (NP) was a major US railroad that served the north-central and north-western portions of the country, with a small amount of trackage into Canada. For auction is a seldom-found common stock certificate from the NP dated June 5, 1879. It is for 10 shares at $100 each. The certificate is somewhat unusual in that it has two vignettes: (a) a steam engine and passenger cars at the top and (b) the image of Frederick Billings, who served as the NP president from 1887-1891; Billings was also one of the early investors in the NP, purchasing one of the original 1/12th interest in the company. The certificate measures appx 12 1/2 x 8 inches; the NP's accounting record form is attached to the left margin, This item is in very good condition, even though it is now over 140 years old. All writing/markings are from its issuance and processing. It has no rips or tears but does have the customary cancellation punch holes. It is sealed and hand-signed. A great addition to someone's collection of NP memorabilia. Images sell! Get Supersized Images & Free Image HostingCreate your brand with Auctiva's Customizable Templates.
