Description: early edition of 'The She King' by James Legge -- Vol. IV in two parts, of his masterpiece 'The Chinese Classics' -- not a first edition but likely a very early fine edition [I believe the true first was published in Hong Kong 1865] -- published by Henry Frowde for the Oxford University Press Warehouse and printed in Hong Kong by the Missionary Society -- likely mid 1870s -- -- text in Chinese and English -- Large 8vo. Pp. xii, 182 + 243 & one double page map [Kingdom of Chow]; (ii), 244-785. -- cover is black cloth with gilt lettering -- -- Vol 1 has some defects to the front cover: 3 edge 'dents' and light smudging -- bindings on both moderately shaken / a little foxing to the endpapers -- moderate handling wear --- overall quite nice for the age -- - Henry Frowde (1841-1927 ) Brethren Archive site: "Professor Bartholomew Price, afterwards Master of Pembroke, became Secretary to the Delegates at Oxford in 1868. His was one of the greatest names connected with the Press, and his was the inspiration to offer the management of the London Office of the Oxford University Press to Mr. Frowde, who entered upon his new duties in February, 1874... ...In 1880, Mr. Frowde was appointed Publisher to the University, taking over the publication of the classical and learned Clarendon Press books.
