Description: 1875 Indian Head Penny won on a bet between E.P. Weston & Charles Rowell in 1879. Indian Head Penny is affixed to a card won. A friendly bet between two men. E.P. Weston, famed 19th century pedestrian, who was largely responsible for the rise in popularity of the sport in the 1860's - 70's. This 1875 penny was won by wager on the walking race between E.P. Weston "Walker" and Englishman athlete Charles Rowell. Rowell was the winner of the 530 mile contest in New York, which finished on Sep. 27, 1879. Photocopies of both Weston's and Rowell's likeness and bio included (see photos). Item was obtained from the Colonel Charles A. Ranlett (1874-1961) Archives. See photos for Ranlett's bio.
