1861 Victorian Solid Silver Cased Travelling Holy Communion Set By Aston & Son

Description: 1861 Victorian Solid Silver Cased Travelling Holy Communion Set. Full English Sterling Silver Hallmarks for Aston & Son. Birmingham, England 1861. Nice set in its original Moroccan leather case, fully lined with dark blue satin. The set comprises of Paton, Gilt lined Wine Goblet and cut glass wine Flask with unmarked silver top. The Paton and Goblet each with ‘IHC’ Christogram within reeded border. The Paton has had a couple of knocks as you can see, The wine goblet is fully gilt lined and is perfect. The wine bottle has lost its original cork stopper or possibly had a silver collar which has come off. It looks like a new cork has been placed into the lid; this seems to work well and provides a water tight seal. There are some very minor nicks/abrasions to the glass bottle. Also some scuffs and marks to the case. Measurements approximately: Paton diameter: 8cm (3.1/8”) Wine goblet height: 9.5cm (3.3/4”) Cut glass wine flask height: 4” (10cm) Box size: 6cm x 12cm x 9.5cm (2.1/3” x 4.3/4” x 3.3/4”) Weight of Silver only: 60.28g The Christogram IHS refers to Jesus and is made up of the first three letters of the name of Jesus when written in the Greek alphabet. The three letters were incorrectly transcribed/written in the Latin/English alphabet as I H S. The monogram became very popular in the Middle Ages and many explanations of IHS were offered, the most common being Iesus Hominum Salvator (latin for “Jesus, Saviour of Mankind”). Likewise, today IHS is sometimes understood to represent the phrase “In His Service”. The Christogram is frequently seen in liturgical art and architecture, especially vestments. This set is already in circulation meaning no new silver has been used. The ultimate in sustainable shopping. All of my items are carefully and lovingly selected by myself.
