Description: An original broadside from 1857, printed at the Village Record Office, West Chester, Pa. The broadside is advertising a horse that is available for breeding.It reads: "Young Octoraro Pilot Lion / Will stand for service this season, at the stable of the subscriber, From the 1st of April, until the 1st of August, in Lower Oxford township, Chester County, 3 miles west of Oxford Borough, and one and a half miles from Hopewell Cotton Works, at the low rate of Seven Dollars to insure a mare with foal, to be paid as soon as the mare is ascertained to be with foal. / Any person parting with an insured mare before she is ascertained to be with foal will be held liable for the insurance. All accidents at the risk of the owner. / Young Octoraro Pilot Lion is a beautiful Bay-roan, rising six years, old 16 hands high, and for strength of muscle beauty and action, is not surpassed by any horse in the cvounty. / Pedigree: Young Octoraro Pilot Lion was sired by the Old Pilot Lion, now owned by John Wilson, his grand sire by Shults' Pilot, his dam wax sired by the Sophes' Lion, his grand dam by Independence. A further description is deemed unnecessary as he will recommend himself to all competent judges. / March 25th 1857. George H. Cope, Proprietor. / Printed at the Village Record Office, West Chester, Pa."This rare broadside features an image of a horse. It is in an old frame that measures approx.: 24.5" x 20.5". I have not examined this outside of the frame. There are obvious signs of repairs being made, some with tape.
