Description: 1857 Methodist Hymn Book John & Charles Wesley Good Condition 177 years old!. Size is 3 x5"This is a very rare printing, in the South right at the cusp of the start of the Civil War. The Methodist Church had split over the issue of slavery. This printing would have come from the Methodist Church South, printed in Nashville..the Methodist Church split over the issue of slavery in 1844. The Southern Methodist Church remained committed to slavery, while the Northern Methodist Church abolished it. This division resulted in separate northern and southern churches. Here is a good antique Methodist hymnal from a historical time in our country. Here, just 3 years before the CIVIL WAR, Europeans and Americans were moving westward and these hymnals with them. This is a nice printing, complete in every way. The cover has some ware issues and the front cover has been strengthened. The front cover has been nicely reinforced with leather. The original cover hinges remain cracked, the covers are firmly attached. Please see all the pictures as they are part of the description.792 pages. 1063 great hymns, an index of hymns, subjects, texts, and verses, and, most unusually, an index of stanzas. The first great migration westward from the east coast was underway and the wagon trains were starting to swarm west. Gold had been discovered in California and the rush was on. This historic hymnal was printed during a rapid Pre Civil War expansion of the American frontier. The Methodist Church responded to the need of the pioneers moving westward by printing hymnals which could be packed with the other possessions carried by the settlers. These hymnals were often the only songbooks when frontier churches were established. There are words and not music staffs because so many of the worshipping places had no musical instruments. The hymns are uniquely noted with the meter number. This indication reminded people that many of our greatly loved hymns can be sung to other familiar tunes. For example ”O For A Thousand Tongues” is a Common Meter song. But it can also be sung to the tune of “Amazing Grace” and visa versa. In 1857 Texas was very much a frontier, with Comanche raids and outlaw problems. The South was aflame with anger of Northern insistence of the abolition of slavery which drove the Southern economy.Someone has written 1847 in it. But this indicates the edition and not the printing date. This historic antique hymnal would make a great gift to someone who enjoys singing… or a choir director… or a pastor or anyone special… or your own fine library! Please enjoy all the pictures as they are part of the description. Ask any questions. I am very responsive. Thanks for looking! Please see my other fine hymnals!
