'Southey's Common-Place Book' is a series of essays and remarks, with historical and literary criticism by the late author. These works contain 'matters equally curious, diversified, interesting, amusing, and instructive'. The First Series is comprised of 'Choice Passages', with the subheading of 'Collections for English Manners and Literature'. These passages cover a range of moral, religious, political, and philosophical content.The Second Series is comprised of 'Special Collections', including 'Ecclesiasticals', 'Spanish and Portugese Literature', and 'Notes for the History of the Religious Orders'. The Third Series is comprised of 'Analytical Readings', including historical essays such as 'Anglo-Irish History', 'French History', and 'Historical Memoirs'. Written by Robert Southey (1774-1843), an English writer and poet who was part of the Romanticism movement. He was one of the celebrated Lake Poets alongside Coleridge and Wordsworth, and was appointed as the Poet Laureate later on in his life. Edited by John Wood Warter, Southey's son-in-law who was also an antiquarian and cleric. With institutional bookplates to paste downs, and institutional stamps to the odd page.Collated, complete. CONDITION Bound in half-calf on marbled boards. Externally, sound. Light rubbing to the extremities and the spine, with marks to boards. Edge wear particularly to the bottom edge of boards. Fading to the top edge of the front board to Vol III, with tears to the bottom of the front board as well. Front joint and hinge to Vol III is weak, with the board held by the leather on spine only. Institutional labels to paste downs and endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Binding is loosening a bit more towards the middle of Vol II. Pages are very bright and clean throughout, with the odd handling mark.
