Description: PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS PRINT HAS EDGE WEAR, SAMAGE TO THE PAPER AT BOTTOM LEFT AND SEVERAL WORM HOLES. THE TOP HALF INCH APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN GLUED TO THE BACKING PAPER IN THREE SPOTS. Having contacted the Kuniyoshi Project, I was informed of the following, printed in brown: Your print shows the actor Onoe Kikugorô III as Tenjiku Kaja (天竺冠者) in the play Onoe Kikugorô ichidai banashi (尾上梅寿一代噺, The Lifetime of Onoe Kikugorô III). The date is the 7th month of 1847, and the publisher is Jôshû-ya Juzô. It was originally the center sheet of a triptych which I am attaching. THE ORIGINAL PRINT MEASURED APPROXIMATELY 10" X 14". THE FOLLOWING CONDITION ISSUES WERE NOTED 1- LOWER LEFT CORNER HAS PAPER LOSS AND CREASING. THERE IS ADDITIONAL MINOR EDGE LOSS ON THE RIGHT SIDE. (PHOTO 2 & 3)2- THE BOTTOM AND RIGHT EDGE HAVE PAPER TONING FROM PRIOR FRAMING (PHOTO 1 & 10)3- THERE ARE NEARLY TWENTY WORM HOLES OF VARYING SIZE, FROM A TINY CIRCULAR HOLE TO SMALL PATTERNS (PRETTY MUCH EVERY PHOTO)4- THERE IS ONE SMALL SECTION OF SURFACE LOSS ON THE PINK WALL OVER THE RIGHT SHOULDER OF THE SAMURAI (PHOTO 13) -(PHOTO 15) IS THE UNDERSIDE OF THE PRINT AND SHOWS WHERE ATTACHED AT TOP EDGE- (PHOTO 14) SHOWS WHERE THE PHOTO IS ATTACHED AT THE TOP EDGE. Colors remain relatively bright but clearly a bit dulled from the original. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE LAST PHOTO IS NOT PART OF THE AUCTION. IT IS AN EXAMPLE OF THE ENTIRE TRYPTICK, OF WHICH THIS IS THE CENTER PORTION ONLY. Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi- Utagawa Kuniyoshi was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. He was a member of the Utagawa school. The range of Kuniyoshi's subjects included many genres: landscapes, beautiful women, Kabuki actors, cats, and mythical animals. PLEASE USE ZOOM FUNCTION ON ALL PHOTOS.
