Description: The 1844 O Reverse of 1843 O large O quarter is the extremely rare transitional reverse variety of the famous 1843 O large O quarter. A variety so rare it is quite easy to state that it is rarer than the 1840 O large O quarter and the 1842 o small date quarter which are among the rarest in the series. Discovered somewhat recently, some 20 years ago, the variety has been realized as an ultra rarity. Only several dozen having been discovered of which two specific die states being known (now three with the discovery of this piece). It is known that the 1843 O large O reverse die was reused the following year in 1844 as visible by the high placement of the mintmark and same die rust marks. The die was paired with an 1844 obverse die and proceeded to strike a small amount of coins -these being the earlier state of the variety. Then the die was taken out of the chamber and was later placed back in, this time with several die cracks and a medal alignment (180 degree die rotation). What make the coin for sale so significant is that it has the later die state die cracks but with a normal alignment. Greg Johnson (the man behind the top seated variety lists) specifically states that "it is possible that there are either coin alignment examples with both die cracks or medal alignment examples with only the first crack". The coin for sale has multiple of those die cracks although faint those cracks are still visible. This example conclusively proves that a mid die state exists and also proves that right before the die was taken out and later placed back in the chamber rotated, all three cracks first started to form (not just the two Greg insinuates as a possibility, although the third die crack on this new mid die state example is extremely faint and hard to picture, that being the one below the beak). Although several normal alignment pieces have been found with the first die crack that being the one under the wing, what makes this piece unique and of a previously undiscovered mid die state is the faint beginnings of cracks above the other wing and through the the eagle's beak along with a normal coin alignment and not the expected medal alignment. This is an amazing piece as realistically the variety as a whole is almost impossible to come by. If you have any questions I'm happy to help, thanks again.
