Description: Two separate books bound together: Second Part of Book: Letters from Portugal and Spain, written during the March of the British Troops under Sir John Moore with a Map of the Route, and Appropriate Engravings. By an Officer. PORTER, Sir Robert Ker. Published by LONDON: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme. 1809. (1809)FIRST edition The first edition of this uncommon work regarding travels in Portugal and Spain during the Peninsula War. Written by Sir Robert Ker Porter, a Scottish artist, diplomat and traveller. Porter is noted for his accounts of times in Russia, Spain and Persia. He was also one of the earliest panorama painters in Britain. This work is based on letters written by Sir Robert Ker Porter on his travels under General Sir John Moore. Moore and Porter met in Sweden where Porter decided to accompany Moore on his military expedition. Porter was therefore present at the Battle of Coruna, and the death of the general. These letters give a detailed account of this battle. Illustrated with six plates. To the preface Porter notes that these letters were 'written on the spot, and immediately as the events arose, of which they are the subjects'. A key first-hand account regarding the state of Portugal and Spain during the Napoleonic Wars. This account of Sir John Moore's expedition and his army in the Peninsula War culminating with his death at Corunna. The graphic and very candid details in this series of letters written on the spot have the power to convey a reader to the scenes described in accurate detail and covers the weeks of travel with the army during its retreat and including battles and skirmishes and other asides, in 24 chapters. Many senior officers died or were seriously wounded at The Battle of Corunna but the troops didn't lose heart. A candid hands on account of this disastrous campaign for the English in this Dunkirk like escape. The description of the Spanish is far from flattering unlike later edited and politically motivated accounts First Part of Book: Notes on a Journey Through France, from Dieppe through Paris and Lyons, to the Pyrennees, and back through Toulouse in July, August and September 1814.
