1805 Antique Print; Temple Church Interior, London after F. Nash

Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique print "Circular Part of The Temple Church, London.". DATE PRINTED: 1805 (dated on print). SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 21.5 x 14.5 cm (8.5 x 5.75 inches) plus margins with a blank back (medium). ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by William Woolnoth from a drawing by F. Nash. Frederick Nash, (1782–1856) was an English painter and draughtsman. Frederick Nash was born in Lambeth. He initially studied architectural drawing under Thomas Malton, then later enrolled at the Royal Academy of Arts. Between 1801 and 1809 Nash worked with the antiquarians John Britton and Edward Wedlake Brayley. In 1810, he became a member of Society of Painters in Watercolours, an organization whose members had seceded from the Royal Academy over complaints that their work was not being recognized. Nash primarily painted landscapes, and made sketching trips to Calais, Caen, the Moselle river and the Rhine. In 1834 he moved to Brighton where he continued working until his death in 1856. PROVENANCE: This print was published in "The Architectural Antiquities of Great Britain...by John Britton" published by Longman & Co, Paternoster Row and J Taylor High Holborn London. John Britton FSA (1771–1857) was an English antiquary, author and editor. After some slight successes as a writer, a Salisbury publisher commissioned him to compile an account of Wiltshire and, in conjunction with his friend Edward Wedlake Brayley, Britton produced The Beauties of Wiltshire (1801; 2 vols., a third added in 1825), the first of the series The Beauties of England and Wales, nine volumes of which Britton and his friend wrote. Britton was the originator of a new class of literary works. "Before his time", says Digby Wyatt, "popular topography was unknown." In 1805 Britton published the first part of his Architectural Antiquities of Great Britain (9 vols., 1805–1814); and this was followed by Cathedral Antiquities of England. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Temple Church is a late 12th-century church in the City of London located between Fleet Street and the River Thames, built by the Knights Templar as their English headquarters. During the reign of King John (1199–1216) it served as the royal treasury, supported by the role of the Knights Templars as proto-international bankers. It is jointly owned by the Inner Temple and Middle Temple Inns of Court, bases of the English legal profession. It is famous for being a round church, a common design feature for Knights Templar churches, and for its 13th and 14th century stone effigies. It was heavily damaged by German bombing during World War II and has since been greatly restored and rebuilt. The area around the Temple Church is known as the Temple and nearby formerly in the middle of Fleet Street stood the Temple Bar, an ornamental processional gateway. Nearby is the Temple Underground station. Please explore my ebay shop for more antique prints. Track Page Views With Auctiva's FREE Counter
