Part of the Nichols find and dispersed by David Nichols of Salem, Massachusetts around 1880 according to John Robinson, The Numismatist August 1917. Long listed atop the census of known survivors of this die, a true GEM with absolutely beautiful, frosty full cartwheel luster and fantastic eye appeal. EDS Breen Die State II. Personally catalogued by Dr. William H Sheldon for the 1947 ANA sale where he described it as "Mint state with almost full mint red. A gem cent." and graded it MS 65. CAC certified.
