Description: 1787 Massachusetts Cent, Transposed Arrows, Ryder 2a-F, R6, PCGS VG detail. One of the great state copper rarities. This piece represents a significant opportunity as it balances presentable quality with relative affordability. Medium brown surfaces that have several small nicks and light roughness, but nothing too horrible for the grade. Solid detail, more like Fine in our estimation with bold legends, a sharp, nearly complete date, and strong definition on the important reverse eagle. The left edge of the C and right edge of the T in CENT can be seen. With many significant colonial collections having come to market in recent decades, several of the two dozen or so Transposed Arrows have appeared at auction, with prices ranging from $18,000 to nearly $300,000 for the gem Ford coin. This piece is less expensive than all of them, and we prefer it to the holed Ditmer coin at $21,600, and a heavily worn AG at $18,400. Provenance: Tom Rinaldo, June 2008 - Sydney F. Martin Collection, Stack's Bowers Galleries, August 2024 ANA Auction, lot 6120, realized $11,400. Free shipping within the U.S. International shipping through eBay Global Shipping Program.
