Completed in 1774 (though not published until 1785), this was the first American-written epic poem, an allegorical work in which Canaan is actually America, which foreshadowed and depicted struggles of the American Revolution. This book is dedicated to George Washington. Timothy Dwight taught at Yale and later became the school's sixth president.
