Spall is when a bullet explodes into tiny fragments when hitting your steel plate at near a perpendicular degree angle. It can also happen on the BACK of the plate when higher energy rounds hit or a second round hits in the same spot, sending metal spall from the plate out into your body. Ricochet is when pieces, or even the whole bullet deflect off a steel plate when hitting at a sharper angle. These 11x14" soft inserts are designed to go in your plate pockets IN FRONT of YOUR steel SAPI plates to mostly eliminate spall and reduce ricochets, and an additional pair can go behind your plates IF you aren't using soft IIIa armor behind them. They stop the bullet fragments exploding off after hitting the steel to keep them from hitting you or your nearby buddy. They do not provide any protection used alone. Front plates are particularly dangerous because of being close to your carotid artery. All steel plates are prone to this problem. These are also needed behind CERAMIC plates is you are not using them over soft armor. The ceramic fractures when shot and can cause injury without other protection. Spall Blockers work for many shots, but then you can replace with new ones to continue using your steel. These are very thin and add only 6 ounces for the pair. Made of the same DuPont Kevlar as in the level IIIa inserts (10 times stronger than steel) and ballistic nylon. Testing shows 1 layer stops most spall, but these are 5 layers, (ballistic inserts are 30 layers) to stop more spall and also reduce ricochets. What you will receive is exactly what is described.
