Description: This vintage trophy is a rare large example of the Haliotis Rufescens species. It measures over 10”x8-7/16”. It has not been acidic cleaned + the exterior of the shell has not oiled or sprayed with clear lacquer. The edge of the shell has not been ground, except where the animal rubbed his shell against the rocks. There are a few barnacles (they can be picked off easily). There’s also some areas of encrusting sponge. Most of the red exterior is intact. There’s a few holes on the exterior from burrowing clams(they grind around to create and keep home). Some of these match a bump or hole inside of the shell. The abalone tries to patch with mother of pearl. This shell is unusually heavy. It is probably 20?yrs old, surviving numerous winter storms (they usually find a cave or overhang for protection.
